Gerhard’s original setting of Lina Sandell-Berg’s text survives as a handwritten copy simply entitled “Hymn”, and may stem from his year studying abroad in Stockholm (1914-15). One verse of Swedish text is sung, followed by David’s singable English verse, arranged from Kent Karlsson’s translation. Slight adjustments to the music and text have been made, including a transposition to the key of Eb from the original Db.
