about

Utransaka mig, min Gud (Search Me, O God)

An a cappella arrangement for male quartet of Psalm 139:23-4 written in Swedish. The singable English verse was arranged by David after Kent Karlsson’s translation and the verses of the psalmist. The handwritten individual parts were set in the key of C. It is recorded in Bb.

Gerhard sang in several quartets during his life – as a friend, family member, student and professional. The most renowned of these ensembles was the Alexis male quartet, which was comprised of Gerhard and three of his brothers, Carl, Oscar and Joseph (although some promotional materials list and picture brother Crispin as well.)

He also formed a male quartet with colleagues at First Lutheran in the spring of 1927. The four friends had all sung in the Wennerberg Chorus at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. They gave but two concerts prior to his untimely and unexpected death.

“Utransaka” may have been sung in church or in concert by one of Gerhard’s own quartets or by the men in one of the several ensembles he conducted.
