Saviour, for the Little One

Number 609 in the 1925 Augustana Synod Hymnal. The tune, entitled “Blessed Hope”, was composed in 1924. Text by Mary Ann Thomson, 1872.

Gerhard considered setting the 1881 Henrietta O. de Lisle text “Safely, Safely Gathered In” instead of “Saviour, for the Little One”: a 1924 handwritten copy among his effects documents a very similar harmonic approach, in fact, the opening and closing measures of the two settings are exactly the same! The 1925 hymnal does include Marcus Morris Wells’ (1815-95) setting of “Safely, Safely Gathered In” as number 607, two pages from Gerhard’s tune. (The spelling of Saviour is as it appears in the 1925 hymnal.)
