about

Sångaren’s Aftonbön (The Singer’s Evening Prayer)

A piece for a cappella male quartet surviving in handwritten form. The sole credit, “A. Jahnke”, is in the upper right-hand corner of the page (indicating the name of the composer.) As of this writing, no information has been found on Jahnke or on the source of the text. The handwriting and style strongly suggest arrangement by Gerhard. On In My Grandfather’s Day, it is recorded in the key of G, transposed from the written Ab. While two verses exist, only the first is sung (following an instrumental reading of the music). The piece may well have been arranged for and sung by the quartet to which Gerhard belonged at the time of his death.

lyrics

English translation by Rev. Terje Ness

Aldrig, sluter Gud Ditt öga,
Du i mörkret är oss när
Och Ditt öra i det höga
Hörer hvad vår bön begär
Dig som leder verdars gång
Dig lof sjunger och vår sång
Dig lof sjunger och vår sång

There is no end to Your sight, O God
You are close to us in the darkness
And Your ears in the heavens
Hear what our prayer asks
You who lead the world’s course
To You we sing our song of praise

Fast dig alla verdar sjunga
Som du slutar i Din famn
Hörer Du då menskors junga
Nämner slapplan de Ditt namn
Der för sjunga vi Dig pris
Gude fader mild och vis
Gude fader mild och vis

Yet to You all worlds sing
You who embrace us
You hear the people sing
People take refuge in Your embrace
Therefore we sing praises to You
God the Father, mild and wise
