about

Lovsång (Song of Praise)

Gerhard’s music for a cappella male quartet received three incarnations:

“The School House Stands by the Flag”, also entitled “Flag Song”, with a text by H. Butterworth (no information has been found on this writer). It was set in the key of B and dated January 8, 1910, at which time Gerhard was studying organ at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois.

“Our Flag Over There” with a text by Gerhard’s sister-in-law Hedvig Grund Hammann. While the date of this setting in Bb is unknown, the more mature handwriting style as well as the use of “Presser Philadelphia” (publishers of “Andante Pastorale”) sheet music indicate the years at First Lutheran. Heddie’s patriotic text may have been informed by her service as a nurse overseas during WWI.

The Swedish text recorded on In My Grandfather’s Day was set in the key of C (though it is recorded in Bb) and may have been arranged for one of Gerhard’s quartets or male choruses during his years at First Lutheran. The setting survives in handwritten part sheets – first and second tenor on one sheet, first and second bass on another. The source of the text remains unknown.

lyrics

English translation by Rev. Terje Ness

Vi prisa och lofva ditt heliga namn
O Jesus som för oss till himmelens hamn
Du som är och som blifver i all evighet
Vår frälsare, konung, vår Gud, vår profet

We praise and exalt Your holy name
O Jesus, You who lead us to the port of heaven
You who are and remain through all eternity
Our Savior, King, our God, our Prophet

Låt ditt ord nu komma till oss
Att din nåd må stärka vår själ
Gif att kärlik och kraft vi af ordet må få
Att till Fadern vi komma må

Let Your word now come to us
That Your grace may strengthen our souls
Grant that the love and strength we receive from Your word
May lead us to the Father

Vi sjunga om dig, du vår frälsare kär,
Du gifver oss tröst och är alltid oss när;
Må vi följa, ej tröttna att vandra din stig;
Du blödde för alla du dog och för mig

We sing to You, dear Savior
You give us comfort and are always near to us
May we follow and not tire of walking Your path
You bled for us all, and You died for me

Gud ske tack och ära för allt
Hvad han gjort och hvad han befallt,
Gud, vår Fader, till dig få vi sätta all tro,
Ty du gifver oss frid och ro

God be thanked and praised for everything He has done
For what He has declared and for what He has ordered
God our Father, in You may we place all our faith,
For You give us peace and serenity
