about

Herren’s nåd (God’s Grace)

An unpublished SATB hymn surviving in handwritten individual part sheets. Gerhard most likely drew the two-verse text from the1921 Svensk Söngdagsskol-Sångbok.

Marita Karlisch of the American Swedish Institute also found the text in the 1819 Psalm-boken and Koral-bok as verses 4 and 5 of the hymn “Bort, mitt hjärta, med de tankar” (“Away, my heart, with the thoughts”). Numerous authors contributed to this seven-verse hymn, though it is unclear who authored the individual stanzas.

lyrics

Herren’s nåd (God’s Grace)

English translation by Kent Karlsson

Ingen herde kan så leta
Efter ett borttapadt får
Kunde du Guds hjerta veta
Huru ömt för dig det slår
Törstar längtar innerlig
Efter den, som söndrat sig
Från hans hjord och får så såta
Skulle du af glädje gråta

No shepherd can so search for a lost sheep
(To the extent that God seeks us)
Can you know God’s heart
and how softly it beats for you
He thirsts and longs sincerely
after those who have strayed
From his herd you can stray
(But if you knew how He cares for you)
For your sake, (you would) weep for joy

Ingen sjö så högt kan svalla
Intet djup så grundlöst är
Intet regn så rikt kan falla
Att det minsta likhet bär
Med den nåd, som Herren blid
Oss bevissar allan tid,
Helst då sjnden vill oss föra
I förderf och oss förstöra

No sea can have waves so big
or depth so bottomless
No rain could possibly fall
That could resemble (God’s seeking for us)
But the grace that God gently bestows on us
Is beyond all time
Sin wishes to take us into misery
and destroy us
